Free Active Directory tool automates workflow management |

Windows administrators this week got some help with Active Directory change control and rule enforcement by way of a free tool from management software vendor NetPro Computing Inc.
The software, called ADMC, automates Active Directory management tasks, such as deleting users or group accounts or changing the properties of active use.
Users can enforce naming conventions with ADMC and replace multiple manual steps for setting up user accounts with automated repeatable and standardized processes. IT managers can also put in place review and approval processes for object creation and modification, according to the company.
The technology is based on NetPro's NetControl services-oriented architecture. Administrators need to download and install a front-end console, and an agent is installed on a domain controller. The user interface is an extension of the native Active Directory interface.
"IT administrators can define specific workflows and approval processes that need to be enforced behind the scenes before those changes are rolled into the production environment," said Brad Hibbert, vice president of product strategy for Phoenix, Ariz.-based NetPro. He added that the tool was designed to fill in functionality NetPro believed was missing from Microsoft's native directory tool set.
The ADMC download is on a new Active Directory community site called TurboChargeAD.org. The site was developed by NetPro and industry expert Don Jones, an author and expert on Microsoft technology.
The site includes tips and best practices from NetPro experts and affiliate consultants, and in the future, more free tools, Hibbert said.
