Microsoft this week released a new version of Process Monitor, a free Windows utility that helps administrators keep an eye on their file system, registry and process/thread activity in real time.
In his blog, Mark Russinovich, a Microsoft fellow, said, "this major update to Process Monitor adds real-time TCP and UDP monitoring to its existing process, thread, DLL, file system and registry monitoring. You can now see the TCP and UDP activity processes performed, including the operation
(e.g., connect, send, receive), local and remote IP addresses and DNS names, and operation transfer lengths. On Windows Vista, Process Monitor also collects thread stacks for network operations."
It runs on Windows 2000 SP4 with Update Rollup 1, Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Windows Vista as well as all 64-bit versions of the operating system.
Process Monitor 2.0 combines the features of two popular utilities developed by Sysinternals -- Filemon and Regmon. Microsoft acquired Sysinternals when it bought Winternals several years ago. The tool can be downloaded at Microsoft's TechNet.
