Continuing to move beyond its traditional role of managing only Windows Server, Microsoft server management software can now monitor Unix and Linux servers too.
Operations Manager R2 beta can also now be installed on 64-bit Operations Manager 2007 servers and has support for the Gateway Role.
Microsoft has said in the past that Operations Manager would eventually centrally monitor all System Center products, which include Configuration Manager 2007, Virtual Machine Manager 2007 and Data Protection Manager 2007. It would also centralize remote access management for IT.
When Operations Manager 2007 was released in May of 2007, it promised many improvements over its predecessor, Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, or MOM. One such improvement was around availability and performance monitoring with such tasks as fault and performance monitoring and end-user response-time monitoring.
