There are more than 400 fixes for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 rolled up in this service pack beta release expected to be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers today.

Aside from a list of fixes, the Windows Server 2008 SP2 beta has:

  • Hyper-V built in with a free "daughter" OS with the standard edition of the server OS, four free licenses with the enterprise edition and unlimited free licenses for the data center version.
  • Group Policy for power management policy settings that promise a 10% efficiency boost on both the desktop and server.
  • A fix that lets legacy license keys on Citrix applications work with WS08 Terminal server.

As for hardware compatibility, the service pack beta now supports Bluetooth v2.1, and Wi-Fi connections from sleep mode. SP2 has a single installer for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and can detect an incompatible driver before the service pack is installed and alert when there is a potential for functionality problems.

The final revision of Windows Server 2008 R2, also known as Windows 7 Server, won't be out until some time in 2010.

Windows Server 2008 R2 promises new Terminal Services functionality and renames Terminal Services as Remote Desktop that caters to virtual desktop infrastructure technology.

R2 will also have a new Active Directory Administration Center that combines the AD, users and PCs, domain and trusts and sites and services administration consoles into one console that uses PowerShell. A Best Practices Analyzer feature recommends the healthiest configuration for a given server role based on the environment it is residing in, as well as other features such as live migration.

Microsoft released an initial service pack beta for Windows Server 2008 and Vista to a limited audience in late October.
