User rights and permissions can be perplexing. If done right, you can increase user productivity, lessen your own workload and tighten system security. However, these goals are often at odds with one another. How do you give this person permissions but not that person? How do you provide users' access to X resource without compromising security? These can sometimes seem like impossible situations to resolve in a way that makes everyone happy. But ultimately, your job is to do just that -- make everyone happy. The prospect is daunting, isn't it?

So how do you do it? Well, first you take a look at this week's featured topic, which provides an excellent collection of tips and advice from our resident experts and technical contributors on how to design, implement and manage permissions and user rights in a myriad of circumstances.

Next, you schedule some time to do a little free online training. The following four one-hour webcasts are part of an ongoing series that addresses XP desktop (i.e., user) issues. Go grab some lunch, and then sit back to watch and listen as industry experts teach you must-know strategies for managing your users.

  • Managing the desktop
Do you want to have more control over what users can and cannot do in your enterprise? Listen and watch as author Jeremy Moskowitz compares Windows XP with earlier-generation desktop OSes, touching on differences in group policy and more.

  • Harnessing the power of power users
At this webcast, Serdar Yegulalp, author of The Windows 2000 Power Users Newsletter, will teach you about XP features that can improve network administration productivity by delegating routine tasks to designated enterprise power users.

  • Desktop deployment issues and migration strategies
OS migration is becoming a larger priority for enterprises. Desktop expert and author Jerry Honeycutt walks you through many of the issues you must consider when deploying Windows XP and Office XP to the business desktop.

  • Secrets of desktop security
Find out from Windows security expert Roberta Bragg how to take advantage of new and essential desktop features that will help safeguard your network from hackers, worms and viruses.
