Microsoft has released an upgrade to the free diagnostics tool that is designed to help IT managers get a health check on their Internet Security and Acceleration Server firewalls.
The company released the ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer Tool v 5.0 , which offers a handful of improvements including a better GUI for the data collection tool, additional configuration checks and more documentation on the checks being performed.
In addition, the new ISA Server tool has an application that creates a Visio network diagram from the analysis data that was collected. That helps administrators see how the ISA Server views the networks, server farms, VPN sites and clients, according to Microsoft's ISA Server team blog.
The tool also allows IT administrators to put all the data in one .cab file and send it to Microsoft for further analysis.
ISA Server is an enterprise firewall, but it can also filter packets and act as an application firewall. It helps protect networks against Internet threats and helps remote users connect safely to data and applications.
ISA Server is now included in Microsoft's Intelligent Application Gateway, or IAG 2007, which is sold by security hardware vendors. IAG 2007 combines the Secure Sockets Layer VPN technology acquired by Microsoft from Whale Technologies in 2006.
