ProLiant

DEFINITION - ProLiant, an "industry standard" computer server from Compaq, typifies the popularly-priced server that is designed to satisfy general computing needs at various levels in an enterprise. Servers like the ProLiant are sometimes purchased in large orders when an enterprise is upgrading its servers, creating a new building installation, or simply becoming larger. Based on several versions of Intel's Pentium III microprocessor, the ProLiant can be ordered with enterprise versions of Windows 2000, Linux, or several other Unix-based operating systems. The ProLiant can also be ordered in configurations containing up to eight Intel microprocessors.

Like other servers designed for industry, the ProLiant comes in models that can be rack-mounted. The ProLiant with the least amount of storage comes with 73 gigabytes. A server can also be equipped with connections for Fibre Channel and similar fast-connect technologies that enable clustering and storage area networks.
