DEFINITION - Seat management is a method of coordinating all the workstations in an enterprise network by overseeing the installation, operation, and maintenance of hardware and software at each workstation. This can greatly reduce the overall cost of operation compared with unmanaged systems and sometimes improve overall performance.

Seat management is often outsourced to a private contractor outside the client corporation or agency. The service is provided on a per-seat basis. A seat is defined as a workstation or terminal that can be operated by one user at a time. In some seat-management plans, the vendor providing the service owns all the hardware and all the programs, and the client rents these as part of the service. In other plans, the client owns the basic programs and the basic hardware such as computers, printers, and scanners, and the vendor provides maintenance, peripheral hardware, and programs needed to carry out the terms of the contract.
