DEFINITION - Winbind is a program that allows users in a heterogeneous network to log in using workstations that have either Unix or Windows NT operating systems. The program makes workstations using Unix functional in NT domains, by making NT appear to look like Unix to each Unix workstation.

Traditionally, solutions to the NT/Unix problem have been awkward and tedious to implement, requiring duplicate accounts for both operating systems. Winbind solves this problem in an efficient manner. All passwords are stored on the domain controller. The Winbind system is intended for administrators of NT-based networks in which the addition of Unix-based workstations is contemplated.
