Windows 2003 Server: Upgrade or Migrate?

The Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server upgrade requires many services to be migrated, not upgraded.

The migrations are typically performed before, during or after the upgrade process. In some cases, the migration actually means that a service (e.g. DFS) must be documented, dismantled and then re-linked in Windows 2003 Server. Here are some services and how you should act before you upgrade a Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server:

MIGRATE
Active Directory: adprep.exe cleans and creates new schema items in preparation for the upgrade to Windows 2000 Server.

IIS 6.0

TEAR DOWN AND REBUILD
These services must be dismantled and re-created manually.

DFS

FRS

WINS (or use migration tool)

Software mirrors must be broken and re-established after upgrade. Spanned Volumes must be disassembled and then re-established after the upgrade.
