You can keep DOS windows open on Win2k or higher using && pause.
You can prefix DOS commands on Win2k or higher with CMD /C and the add && PAUSE on the end to hold the window open. For example: START -> RUN CMD /C PING 192.168.1.1 && PAUSE, then press a key to close that new window.
