While working in Windows 2000/XP, sometimes explorer.exe will crash, leaving you with a desktop but no start menu, task bar or system tray. To recover, Control-Alt-Delete to bring up Task Manager and select File -> New Task and enter explorer.exe. You're now back in control of your machine!
