An easier way to see "ghost" devices in Windows 2000 is to open Device Manager (or right click on Device Manager); select view and click on Show Hidden Devices.
From here, the device can be removed even if it was hidden originally, assuming of course, the device is not being used by the system.
An example of this is to delete an old network card configuration.
