Server performance

Poor performance from your servers? Does it look like a network issue? Don't forget about your hardware IRQ's. With so much focus on service packs, admins are forgetting the basics.

We recently had a NT server showing high alignment errors with a NIC using 25% of our CPU. Scrubbing the network from cables to ports to drivers gave little improvement. Calling the vendor yielded an IRQ change, which brought the utilization down to 1%. The alignment and run errors also stopped.
