Step 1: Choose your target Windows version

It's still possible to pursue Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 as your target platform for Microsoft certification. That said, the next generation of Windows is scheduled for release in 2006 (when the new Longhorn desktop ships) and 2007 (when the new Longhorn server does likewise). Only if your employer is still using Windows 2000 exclusively and has no plans to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 should you even consider pursuing Windows 2000 credentials, as late in the Windows 2000 lifecycle as we are right now. Even so, if you go after Windows 2000 credentials, you should probably also plan on pursuing the necessary upgrade exam(s) for Windows Server 2003 as soon after earning them as possible (Exam 70-292 for MCSA; Exams 70-292 and 70-296 for MCSE).
